Last year I ordered a shuttle from Antigua, Guatemala to Flores with a group of fellow tourists. It turned out this shuttle was only dropping us off at a bus station in Guatemala City. Not only were we being dropped off at a station, we were all going to separate ones. I was the first stop, and there were no fellow tourists for me to copycat or cower behind.
The shuttle driver took my passport and left it in the bus terminal while I stood abandoned on the side of the road. I somehow (I really do question how I make it through these situations) made it on the right bus, passport returned, only to stall everyone behind me while I figured out what 21V meant.
If anyone is wondering, V is for Ventana, the window seat. I know this because I spent 3 minutes turning on my phone, connecting my data, and then
googling the word “window” in Spanish while a crowd waited to get on behind me.
I made it to Flores unscathed. In the bus terminal, a bus was boarding around the time my bus was scheduled to leave. I walked up to security with my ticket to see if they'd let me board or send me back, and they let me by. I truly didn't know if I had gotten on the right bus until I was actually in Flores. The lesson I learned was to definitely be more prepared if you are doing more off the beaten track travel. I also learned that most people are friendly and there to help. Even with a language barrier, there was always someone smiling or trying to point the way.
