– it’d be easy to assume I’m perfectly poised and feeling lekker all the time. But I’m just your average South African girl turning my travels into content. I would go as far as saying that on 80-90% of our trips we experience fails: missed flights, theft, horrible accommodation, running out of money, language barriers, running out of fuel etc. In the moment, they may bring us down or mess up our plans, but oh, do they make for some of the most memorable stories and great lessons! After all, as travellers, shouldn’t we be grateful for these experiences because travel wouldn’t be as transformative without them?
Yes, you read that right. After telling all our family and friends that my husband and I are flying to the United Kingdom from South Africa on December 18th, 2019 at 1:00 in the morning, we nearly missed our flight.
The morning of December 18th came, I went to get my hair done and came home to relax and spend time with my family. In my mind I believed we were leaving at 1am on the 19th of December – don't ask me why! 5 hours before we were supposed to fly, Matthew, my husband, urgently called me into the lounge saying we are leaving TODAY, at 1:00 in the morning. I stood there, jaw on the ground, scratching my head and asking “Are you serious babe?” Matthew looked at me, started laughing and said “Yes, we are leaving in 4 hours. Hurry!”
I sprinted around the house, like a flash and started packing! We still had to shower, eat, double check we had everything and rearrange our lift to the airport. It looked like a hurricane went through our house. 2 hours go by, and we are ready…
We have 2 hours, before we board the plane and embark on our journey. Luckily our family home is about 15 minutes away from the airport. And we made it – yaaaay!
If it wasn't for my amazing husband double checking the time and date, we would have missed our flight. You would think a seasoned traveller would never get that wrong.
Since then, we triple check our flight dates and times in the days leading up to our departure.
