Exploring hidden gems in Morocco

Morocco is a captivating and beautiful destination to explore, offering plenty of diverse landscapes, a rich culture and exciting adventure opportunities. Whether you’re dining on fresh seafood and soaking up the sun along the Mediterranean coast in the north; or immersing yourself in the dramatic vistas and rich heritage of the south, Morocco offers an experience like no other.

Here, we dive into three hidden treasures in Morocco that you won’t want to miss out on during your visit.

The enchanting city of Tangier

Tangier is a place that’s been sculpted by multiple cultures over thousands of years, resulting in an enchanting city with a mix of French colonial architecture, Spanish influences, and Moorish style. The old medina boasts stunning views of the Strait of Gibraltar and mouth-watering dining options, alongside a plethora of handicraft stores, tea rooms and souks, where creative souls continue to come together in this bohemian haven.

The Dar-el-Makhzen palace is well worth a visit while in Tangier. Now housing the Kasbah museum, this monument showcases the history and anthology of this incredible city. Immaculately white, the 17th-Century architecture is a sight to behold all by itself – but be sure to also explore the intricate mosaics, picturesque gardens and ancient artefacts also on display.

The oasis of Midelt

If you’re heading through the middle of Morocco, don’t forget to pause in the quaint market town of Midelt. This nomadic settlement is something of an oasis in the otherwise stark plains, where apples are grown in lush orchards thanks to the nearby Moulouya River. Set between the High and Middle Atlas Mountains, Midelt enjoys a cooler climate compared to the heat of the surrounding desert. Discover Barbary macaque monkeys within the surrounding cedar forests, or dine with locals over a bowl of fresh, authentic Moroccan harira (soup) for an insight into the charms of the Moroccan way of life.

The locals are friendly and hospitable, and you can enjoy a range of activities here to further your education of Moroccan culture and history. Visit the local souks, enjoy a desert tour on camelback, where the clear skies offer unparalleled star-gazing opportunities, or craft your own tablecloth on a traditional loom in one of the workshops.

The incredible Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains, stretching over 1,600 miles, are a highlight on any trip to Morocco, where you’ll find towering peaks and incredible views. The Berber people who have inhabited the mountains for millennia have a distinctive culture and heritage that predates their Arab influences, and visiting the villages as you hike this impressive scenery is a must – their music, craftsmanship and hospitality are second to none.

One place not to skip along this mountain range is the archaeological site of Volubilis. As a prime example of Roman colonisation, this 42-hectare site offers a glimpse back in time with its wonderfully preserved columns, buildings, mosaics, and marble and bronze statues.

Inscriptions from not only the Roman period but also from when the site was occupied by Christians, Mauritanian and Islamic communities can be discovered here, all with the majestic views of the mountains as a backdrop.
